History of Xylitol

Discovered in the 1890’s by a German chemist, Emil Fischer, and at the same time M. G. Bertrand – a French chemist. Chemically, xylitol is categorized as a sugar alcohol and not a sugar. Xylitol was first popularized in Europe. Researchers in Finland demonstrated the health benefits of xylitol and the industry was founded! Xylitol manufacturing began in Finland and is quite common in Finland today.
